The Importance of Early Cancer Detection in Children: Minister of Health Highlighted Concerns and Solutions

Jakarta

Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin RI highlighted the large number of cancer cases that are detected too late. This is still a major problem in the country. In fact, the sooner cancer is detected, the more appropriate treatment can be carried out so that the risk of death is greatly reduced.

In children in Indonesia, he highlighted, there are four types of cancer that are most commonly found, namely leukemia, lymphoma, brain cancer and retinoblastoma. According to him, with current technology, there is great potential for cancer to be detected as early as possible. But unfortunately in Indonesia, many people tend to be afraid to see a doctor because they are afraid of being found out that they are sick.

“How do you detect early? Early detection is developing. Just like people with heart disease, people using a stethoscope are seen. ‘Oh, this is what it sounds like, this is heart disease’,” he said when met detikcom in the 17th Steps of Loyal Love to Serve with Heart with the Indonesian Cancer Childhood Love Foundation (YKAKI) at TMII, East Jakarta, Friday (17/11/2023).

On the same occasion, YKAKI Chairman Ira Soelistyo explained that often, parents in Indonesia do not realize that their child’s complaint of symptoms is actually caused by cancer. Instead of immediately having their child checked by a doctor, parents often guess, thinking that their child ‘just has the common cold’.

“Cancer in children, as far as I know, cannot be prevented. So any child can definitely get cancer. Now the problem is how to recognize the symptoms and signs? So if parents, generally mothers can recognize the symptoms and signs, well she “You can immediately take him to the nearest hospital,” he said.

“So don’t be suspicious or afraid, you don’t want to bring your child (thinking) it’s just a common cold. Don’t do that. It’s better for us to be suspicious, we take him to the hospital, we check, hopefully it’s wrong. But even if it’s true, it’s handled immediately. That’s “The possibility of recovery is high,” added Ira.
