The Importance of Dental Hygiene and Common Mistakes Made by Bulgarians

Only 30% of Bulgarians brush their teeth, according to statistics of the Bulgarian Dental Union. The percentage of patients who make serious mistakes in their dental hygiene is much higher.

“Actually, these 30% know how to properly use a brush and paste. We have a very low health culture because there is no one to teach us. Many people think that caries is inherited, ignorance is inherited,” commented dentist Dr. Velislava Fatty in the studio of “Bulgaria Morning”.

She demonstrated on the air of Bulgaria ON AIR the best brush – the one with even bristles, without additional rubber bands and decorations.

“It’s important that every bristle reaches the tooth. Gums trap bacteria, which then spreads throughout the tooth cavity. A good toothbrush should last longer, a good brush shouldn’t have to be replaced on the first or second month,” said the dentist.

Dr. Mazneva explained that brushes with hard bristles damage the enamel. It does not recommend the use of electric brushes.

“Avoid it being more than once a week, they are designed for people with limb mobility problems, for example, to make them easier,” she specified.

The dentist demonstrates the correct cleaning of the teeth, which should not be done with rotating movements of the brush. And he indicated 3 to 5 minutes as the time for oral hygiene.

“Many toothpastes contain the same ingredients. Some contain chlorhexidine, which has a healing effect, and it is good to use it for no more than 2-3 weeks. Pastes with an abrasive effect hurt the enamel, the teeth become whiter, but more sensitive,” said Dr. Velislava Mazneva.
