Why is this important?
There is still too little transparency about what happens to our data. A robot vacuum cleaner seems harmless, but an entire profile can be made of you through analysis. Van den Heuvel: “There is an economic aspect. How do Europeans use a car or certain appliances such as a vacuum cleaner, dishwasher, or a security camera? Information can be extracted from this to improve the products. How those devices work, what the user statistics are. That is still a reasonable principle from an ethical point of view, but for each of the listed situations we must give our consent and be aware that this is the case.” “A Chinese robot vacuum cleaner can scan your home for targeted cleaning. There doesn’t seem to be much to that, but there are cameras in that vacuum cleaner that can look around. China has great supercomputers. Add artificial intelligence to that and people will be able to recognize certain patterns. The next time you go to China, they may already have created a whole profile of you, automatically.” “You can say you have nothing to hide, but it doesn’t have to be the case that if you have a TV or a robot vacuum cleaner made in China, then that is a safe conduct to pass on all the data that that device can collect. to China”, Van den Heuvel points out. “There is no international certification or approval that your data does not go abroad unnecessarily. The European legislator must take initiatives. It will not come from America or China.”
