The Importance of Correctly Filling Your Organic Waste Bin: Tips and Exclusions

The DLB Dreieich and Neu-Isenburg AöR can now look back on eight years of comprehensive organic waste collection in Dreieich and Neu-Isenburg. The constantly increasing amounts collected show that the separate collection of biowaste continues to be popular among the general public. Awareness of waste separation has been raised and a lot of organic waste that used to be disposed of with residual waste has found its way into the organic waste bin. In 2022, over 2,000 tons of organic waste were collected in Neu-Isenburg. Collection takes place regularly every 14 days – weekly in the summer months (June to September).

Most citizens conscientiously separate their organic waste. In some cases, however, it is found that the correct sorting or filling of the organic waste bin causes problems. Plastic bags are a recurring problem.

Some of the neatly sorted kitchen waste is put into the organic waste bin via a plastic bag. Probably to keep the bin in as clean a condition as possible. But this is an incorrect filling! The plastic bags cannot be sorted out cleanly in the organic waste treatment plant and thus end up in the compost if the organic bin is not filled correctly.

Organic plastic bags excluded from collection

So-called bio-plastic bags are also excluded from collection (specification of the district of Offenbach). The same applies to the compostable organic bags made from corn starch. The so-called bioplastic bags are biodegradable, but they take too long for the plant operator to decompose in the composting process. Accordingly, it often happens that bioplastic components are not decomposed in the combined fermentation and composting process and contaminate the compost.

The DLB Dreieich und Neu-Isenburg AöR recommends the use of paper bags or newspaper for the collection of organic waste. Suitable paper bags are available commercially and from the DLB. The set (20 bags) costs 1.50 euros at the DLB. You can also wrap the kitchen waste in newspaper or paper towels. This absorbs any water that forms and rotting or freezing processes are prevented.

Information on the correct sorting of organic waste is also available on the DLB website at www.dlb-aoer.de or by phone at 06102/3702-349

Tips on how to deal with the bio bin

• Wrap kitchen waste in newspaper or paper towels.
• Lay newspaper on the bottom of the compost bin, this absorbs any water and reduces rotting or freezing processes.
• Do not fill in liquid leftovers
• Put the compost bin in the shade in summer
• Always keep the lid of the compost bin closed. This prevents insects from settling.
• Do not compress the organic waste.
• Put damp grass clippings in the organic waste bin just before emptying
