The Importance of Adult Vaccination: What Vaccines Adults Need and Why It’s Essential for Public Health

Pediatricians vaccinate children from birth until they grow up when they stop visiting us and also getting vaccinated, because the parents believe that they are done. And should adults get vaccinated? Among us, there is no such culture. And adults should also get vaccinated, because like children, they get and die from diseases that can be prevented with a vaccine.

What vaccines should I get? Where I go? Who should put them on me? If your doctor has not talked to you about the subject, ask him or her or go and ask one of the many private or public vaccination centers in the country; and in which there should be well-trained personnel who allow vaccination to anyone who requests it without the unfounded excuses that are often offered for not doing so.

What are the necessary vaccines in adulthood?

  • Adults should complete their vaccination schedule with at least one updated dose against COVID-19.
  • Against the flu or influenza every year.
  • Against Diphtheria, Tetanus and Whooping Cough with a booster every 10 years.
  • Polio in adults not vaccinated or incomplete with the inactivated virus vaccine IPV.
  • Hepatitis B.
  • Against chickenpox if you have not had it.
  • Against the human papillomavirus.
  • Against pneumococcus.

There are other vaccines not available in our environment, which are necessary to keep the entire population protected: vaccine against Respiratory Syncytial Virus (Abrysvo and Arexvy), against Herpes Zoster (shingles), vaccine (Jynneos) against monkeypox. sexually transmitted disease and the new pentavalent vaccine (Penbraya) against meningococcus.

Why vaccinate the entire population including pregnant women and not just children? Because vaccines prevent complications and deaths depending on the person’s age, they act according to their immune and health status, lifestyle, occupation or type of work, travel destinations and sexual activity.

Finally, let us keep in mind that if the mother, father, older siblings, grandparents, uncles, godmother or friend, people who are around the newborn or small child, who express their love with caresses, kisses and hugs, If they are not vaccinated, they become a source of contagion, illness and death for that child that they truly claim to love and protect. Therefore, everyone, children and adults, must be properly vaccinated, to protect ourselves and others. If you haven’t done it, you will always have time to do it.
