Jakarta, Bhirawa.
President of the Indonesian Nutrition Association, Dr. dr. Luciana B Sutanto, MS, SpGK (K) said that iron has an important role in the child’s body, especially to support maximum growth and development.
Inadequate iron intake can have a short-term impact on decreasing intelligence, brain function, children’s motor skills such as easy fatigue, poor appetite, and lowering the immune system so as to increase the possibility of infection.
“If it is not handled properly it can affect children’s performance at school, attentional and social changes, and changes in behavior in children,” said Luciana B Sutanto in Jakarta, Monday (30/01/2023).
According to him, in children over one year old, prevention of anemia can be done by providing balanced nutritional food including food and drink containing animal protein sources that are rich in iron and other micronutrients that support iron absorption such as vitamin C. This is because the combination of iron and Vitamin C with a molar ratio of 2:1 can support an increase in iron absorption up to 2x. Small can grow to the maximum.
Furthermore, Dr Lucy added, Intervention through comprehensive nutrition and education about the importance of fulfilling a unique combination of Iron and Vitamin C is an effort that can be made in breaking the chain of anemia both within the individual, family, group and community spheres.
