Despite the importance of vitamin D for the body, one must be careful with its nutritional supplements, because taking them in high doses poses a major risk to kidney health, according to Dr. Sherif Hatta, consultant in preventive medicine and public health.

Hattah said that excess vitamin D cannot be eliminated through urine, because it is a fat-soluble vitamin, which leads to its accumulation in the body.

The preventive medicine consultant added that the accumulation of vitamin D in the body may increase the risk of kidney failure, noting that high blood creatinine is one of the warning signs.

It was revealed that too much vitamin D can lead to high levels of the mineral calcium in the blood, causing the formation of calcium stones in the kidneys.

Hetta pointed out the importance of dealing with vitamin D supplements like any medicine, stressing the need to consult a doctor before taking them, to find out whether the body needs them or not, by measuring its levels in the blood, and then determining the safe dose of it per day.

He stressed that vitamin D is naturally available in many foods, such as eggs and meat, in addition to sunlight, provided that one is exposed to it from eight in the morning until ten in the morning or from four in the afternoon until six in the evening.
