The Implications of the Upcoming Elections in North Macedonia for Inclusion of Bulgarians in the Constitution

Against the background of the upcoming elections in the Republic of North Macedonia and the European elections, the inclusion of Bulgarians in the Constitution of the RSM has a horizon – far in time. Kostadin Filipov, a long-time correspondent of Bulgarian media in Skopje, said this in the program “Bulgaria, Europe and the world in focus” on Radio “Focus”.

“The political calendar has become a joke in the Republic of North Macedonia – within one month, both parliamentary elections and possibly two rounds of the presidential elections will be held. This is how the dates came together, that they simply coincide. Even the date of the parliamentary elections, May 8, has been set and for the run-off, if there is one, in the presidential elections. So from here until the end of April and the beginning of May, no other topic for the Republic of North Macedonia could be in the focus of our attention, except for the pre-election struggle,” he noted Filipov.

According to him, the pre-election struggle officially started a month before the date of the elections, but it started a long time ago: “I think that for the parliamentary elections it started two years ago after the local vote in the Republic of North Macedonia, when the opposition in the form of VMRO-DPMNE won decisively victory over the ruling Social Democratic Union, and this electoral result gave them political motivation to demand quick change, early parliamentary elections, in which a change of power would take place. But anyway, the rulers held out until the date, to serve out their entire four-year term, and regular parliamentary elections will be held. Unfortunately, one of the most important topics in the election campaign will be membership in the European Union, who is “For” and who is failing it,” the journalist pointed out.

According to him, the opinion that the Republic of North Macedonia has already fulfilled all the commitments it has to the European Commission and the European Union weighs more heavily: “In order to be able to basically start the negotiation process for membership. You know, there was a condition to change the Constitution in the country and the entry of the Bulgarians in it. But it seems to me that the position of the VMRO-DPMNE, which with its 44 deputies blocked the creation of a 2/3 majority in the parliament to vote on the questionable change to the Constitution and the inclusion of the Bulgarians, turned out to be a serious political failure of the overall idea of starting membership negotiations with the Republic of North Macedonia. Because I don’t see, at least within this calendar of 2024, another chance to start these negotiations”.

Kostadin Filipov also added that the prospect of the start of negotiations and the inclusion of Bulgarians in the Constitution of the RSM is somewhere far in the horizon, as there are too many elections and changes that will take place at a high level.
