The Implications of the Rise in the Dollar Exchange Rate: Lebanese Debate and Political Tensions

“Lebanese Debate”

Political analyst Faisal Abdel Sater said, “No one in Lebanon understands the nature of the sudden rise in the exchange rate of the dollar, after it had stabilized for about a month and a half, and the Lebanese enjoyed some monetary stability, although this matter has many question marks.”

In an interview with the “Lebanese Debate”, Abdel Sater said: “This matter indicates that there are no constants in Lebanon, and what we are witnessing departs from the logic and literature of the economic reality. No one knows why the dollar is rising or why it is declining,” linking what happened to the existing political tensions.

He also considered that “the rise was remarkable, and is related to the continuation of the political collapse at the level of discourse and at the level of the scene.”

He pointed out that “the Lebanese today are counting on the five-party meeting in Qatar, but I do not think that they have anything that can cure their anger in terms of presidential elections, as nothing indicates a change in what may occur in the political scene, especially since the French endeavor in Lebanon has reached a near A complete dead end, and it will not be able to achieve anything, in light of the intransigence on the Lebanese scene.

And he stressed that “all the leaks and rumors that we hear about changing some positions are untrue, especially in terms of marketing a third name, and some parties talked about the name of the army commander, General Joseph Aoun, but so far I have not seen any serious shifts in this context.”

He added, “We are still in the same vicious circle, and it is remarkable that the caretaker prime minister, Najib Mikati, lives in another world, far from all these crises that are falling on the Lebanese. And not about the vacancy of the military council, or about talking about diplomatic formations and about the turmoil of Foreign Minister Abdullah Bou Habib after going to Syria and heading the Lebanese delegation, because we live in a country where there is no responsible authority.

He touched on the statement of the Free Patriotic Movement, which he described as “very disturbing” when it reminded the Lebanese of the issue of the displaced since 2012, and the campaign launched against it. “Today we are at a very dangerous crossroads related to the decision to keep the displaced Syrians in Lebanon.”

In conclusion, Abd al-Sater warned against “convulsive and renewed political discourse that may produce dangerous repercussions, especially after what we saw with the head of the Lebanese Forces party, Samir Geagea, from words that suggest that he does not care about a country, a citizen, or the people, following his talk of a battle of defiance and head-breaking.” related to the presidential candidate.
