The Impact of Western Sanctions on Russia Amplified by Putin’s Unexpected Acknowledgement

Jakarta

Russian President Vladimir Putin say something surprising. He stated that the number of sanctions against Russia, related to the invasion of Ukraine, could have a negative impact.

This acknowledgment was conveyed by Putin after previously always insisting that Moscow was adapting to a series of sanctions from the west.

“The sanctions imposed on the Russian economy in the medium term could actually have a negative impact,” Putin said at a government meeting broadcast on Russian television.

Western countries imposed sanctions that Russia had never received. It is known that the sanctions arose after Putin deployed the military to Ukrainian territory a year ago.

The economic sanctions received by Russia are particularly related to oil and gas exports. Putin has repeatedly stated that Moscow is capable of dealing with the barrage of sanctions.

At a meeting on Wednesday (29/3) local time, Putin said the unemployment rate in his country “remains at an all-time low.” Meanwhile, inflation is expected to “fall below four percent” at the end of March after surging in the spring of last year.

He added that ‘a return to a growth trajectory should not relax us’.

“We need to support and strengthen positive trends in our economy, increase its efficiency, ensure technological, personnel and financial sovereignty,” Putin stressed.

Furthermore, Putin at the meeting called on the Russian government to “act quickly and without red tape and unnecessary delays”.
