The Impact of US Sanctions on VSMPO-Avisma and Global Titanium Supply Chains

In March of last year, the company announced that it was ending exports to Washington and redirecting them to other countries. VSMPO-Avisma is the only company with a full production cycle – from extraction and processing of raw materials to finished products, and owns about 90% of Russian exports of titanium, which is used in the production of Boeing and Airbus aircraft.

In addition to VSMPO-Avisma, the new sanctions list includes four more Russian companies that, according to the Americans, supply the Russian military-industrial complex, including drone production. VSMPO-Avisma is listed as a supplier of titanium to the military industry.

More companies have been sanctioned in China – accused of participating in a scheme to supply sanctioned high-tech components to the special technology center in St. Petersburg, which produces drones for the Russian military.

In addition to Russian and Chinese companies, the Commerce Department’s list includes companies from Germany, Finland, the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Pakistan.
