Unexpected pregnancy leads to stress and depression Postpartum depression of mothers is little compared to the disorders of fathers
Two lines on the test and the words “you will become a dad” strike the heart of all men. Only some people, realizing their future fatherhood, jump to the ceiling and thank their beloved, while others want to get drunk and forget themselves. In the second case, we are usually talking about an unplanned pregnancy.
Scientists from Australia have found that an unwanted child has a detrimental effect on relationships in a couple, and even more strongly on the mental health of future fathers. And not only during a woman’s pregnancy, but also in the first years of a child’s life.
After studying the moods and medical records of more than 8 thousand men, researchers came to the conclusion that even a planned pregnancy can cause stress, depression, alcoholism and post-traumatic disorder in the father. And if the baby is born unexpectedly, these reactions double. Most often, expectant or new fathers experience depression. And although many people talk about postpartum depression in mothers, it turns out that this condition is even more common in fathers.
Moreover, it does not matter whether this is the first child or not: if he was not in the plans, depression covers the father with equal force. Scientists explain this by saying that a woman’s unexpected pregnancy deprives her partner of a sense of control. Researchers are confident that every expectant father should be tested for so-called perinatal depression and treated if necessary, because their mental health affects not only the relationship with the woman, but also the health of the child.
