An international study carried out before the start of the war in Ukraine on the population of marine animals showed that there are at least 253,000 dolphins left in the Black Sea. The study also showed that their population has not decreased in the last 20 years. However, the number of dolphins in the Black Sea has dropped by at least 5,000 since Russia attacked Ukraine. Moreover, many mammals migrated to the Danube waters.
Researchers believe that the war in Ukraine has greatly affected the dolphins, who have had to look for food in other areas. “It is quite a rare phenomenon. Their presence in the Danube is most likely related to food, they are looking for food”, said Adrian Filimon, scientific researcher at the “Grigore Antipa” Marine Research and Development Institute in Constanța.
“Usually, they don’t enter the Danube, they fish in the sea. Scrumbia, for example, is now… The migration somehow started, and because of that. When the winters were harder, 10, 15 years ago, mackerel started somewhere after the middle of February, March, now in November, in December, we already have mackerel. It changed. Global warming is felt”, explained Eduard Acsente, tour guide.
Several dead dolphins were found on the beaches of Romania
The latest data from the NGO Mare Nostrum show that only in the last few weeks, 45 dead dolphins were found in the county on the beaches of the Romanian coast. The last dead mammal was discovered on April 4, on the beach in Eforie Sud. It is a male, which was in an advanced state of decomposition. For this reason, finding the cause of death is almost impossible. The representatives of the organization said that several dolphins of this species were brought to the shore by the appeal.
“The failure rate is quite high this year compared to past years. Of the stranded specimens, 20% have traces of netting on the surface of the body. It is sad that during the prohibition period, when this should not happen, specimens with traces of nets appear, which indicates that there is a phenomenon of poaching in the Black Sea”, Costin Timofte, NGO Mare Nostrum, said, according to ziuaconstanta.ro.
