The impact of the virus The flu tripled in the last week in the province, according to data provided by the General Directorate of Public Health. If between November 20 and 26 the incidence remained at 36 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, between November 27 and December 3 the rate increased to 94 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The health area of Ourense, Verín and Valdeorras is the one with the highest transmission of the virus throughout Galicia, followed by Lugo, which records 71 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
The epidemiological report shows an unequal impact among the population: those over 65 years of age have one of the lowest incidences of the pathology, with 10 infections per 100,000 inhabitants, while among those under 5 to 19 years of age the rate increases to 67 cases. Nevertheless, Saúde Pública points out the growth in infections among those over 65 years of age during the past week.
In fact, in the seven Galician health areas, hospitalizations of elderly patients with flu have increased: the rate now reaches 7.5 admissions per 100,000 infected. At the moment, 257 people have been admitted to hospital centers in the community, all with influenza A.
For now, the intensity of flu activity is low, although the trend is increasing. Compared to previous years, the impact among the population is less than usual at this time of year. In 2022, the wave of infections of the pathology reached its peak in October and November.
Vaccination
The covid and flu vaccination campaign ends tomorrow in Expourense, although it will continue at the Ourense University Hospital Complex (CHUO). The Ministry of Health encourages people to protect themselves against both viruses before the end of the year. Those over 80 years of age can make an appointment at their health center to receive the vaccine. Those under 80 must go to the hospitals (CHUO, Verín and O Barco), after requesting an appointment through the Sergas website.
