The Impact of the ‘Corn Dollar’ on the Price of Standing Farms and Consumer Prices

The price of standing farms increased after the implementation of the “corn dollar” and could be transferred to the consumer as of this week.

According to the different private surveys of the sector, the implementation of the so-called “corn dollar”, added to the seasonal component, will allow a certain recomposition in the values of beef cuts, which continue “behind” in relation to inflation

Last week it closed with increases of around 20% in the price of standing farms in the Cañuelas market. An increase that, they point out from the sector, could be transferred to the consumer as of this week.

“The new price of the dollar for corn is not only going to affect the cost of increased feed in beef, but also in pork, poultry, eggs and milk. All these products are going to suffer changes in the cost of food,” Miguel Schiariti, president of the Chamber of Meat Industry and Commerce (CICCRA), told Ámbito.

In this sense, he explained that in the coming days a rise in the price of beef cuts could be reflected in the gondolas: “The increase that occurred in the market in the last days of last week will surely translate into a increase of around $150 starting this Monday. The other products, some will be able to move it to the counter and others, not. But, in beef, surely from this Monday there will be increases. That, perhaps, it will not be from one day to the next, but it will be transferred throughout the week ”.

Along the same lines, from Ecolatina they had pointed out that “extending the ‘agro dollar’ to cereals such as corn implies making a relevant input more expensive for the fattening sector of chickens and pigs and feedlots.”

It should be remembered that, as a result of the drought, meat has accumulated a marked delay in relation to inflation in recent months. That is why, beyond the implementation of the “Corn dollar”, the sector expected an increase in the coming months.

In fact, days ago the Secretary of Agriculture, Juan José Bahillo, spoke about it: “Beef has a significant delay. If you compare it with inflation, it depends on the category, it is between 40% and 60% late. At some point that will be rearranged. Now there is a significant supply, because as a result of the drought, the producers had to liquidate and continue to do so. They sent the feedlot, which today has a historical occupation capacity, because it was sent to speed up the fattening process. We still have about a month and a half of good supply. I don’t want to make people uneasy, but there will be a realignment of prices. This happened last year.”

Meanwhile, when referring to the “Corn dollar” and the possible transfer to prices, the official pointed out that the Ministry of Economy is “working so that this does not happen”: “We summon the poultry and pork chain, which may have modification of costs due to the rise in corn and lose some competitiveness. So that this cost is not transferred to the price, try to compensate for this change in costs, ”he said. (Source: Financial Area)
