The Impact of Tantrums on Productivity and Employee Retention

Tantrums cause lack of productivity and sudden resignations

Samaher Seif El Yazel

Assistant Professor of Psychology and Psychotherapist Dr. Jihan Rashad, work environments are stressful for most individuals, and a large percentage of workers feel stressed and angry, according to the World Health Organization report, due to many factors affecting the work environment, including discrimination and inequality, excessive workloads, poor participation in work-related decisions, and lack of job security.

She added, we find that most of the episodes of intermittent explosive disorder occur within the work environment, which poses a threat to mental health and is a factor influencing “wasted productivity” and “sudden resignation” cases. Therefore, we call on the various work bodies to take effective measures to prevent the risks of anger attacks, protect and promote Mental health in the work environment by providing psychological training courses for workers and providing psychological treatment support for workers who suffer from mental health conditions instead of accepting the sudden resignation of the employee or punishing him for low productivity.

Regarding the types of anger attacks and whether they are considered a psychological disorder or behavioral problems, she said that anger attacks are violent emotional outbursts in response to a feeling of frustration or an obstacle to the desired behavior in a specific situation. Early childhood (between the ages of two to four years approximately) is a developmental behavior that falls within the characteristics of the natural stage, as it is a method of communication for some children when they feel frustrated, tired, hungry, or in pain, or to attract attention. Experts in the psychological field advise parents to work on distracting the child, which It helps to stop the tantrum and then train the child after getting out of this situation to use a more effective communication method (talking with parents – breathing – using appropriate methods of expression for the child). The number of tantrums that occur and become rare after the age of five years, and here we give the first warning signal in this matter, if these tantrums are repeated after the age of 5 and the tantrum lasts for more than 15 minutes and if several bouts occur in one day, if they are accompanied by breathing problems or Sleep, food, or violent behavior. A psychiatrist or psychotherapist should be consulted without hesitation in seeking psychological counseling.

And she stressed the importance of resorting to medical advice in such cases, because a breath-holding spell during anger may be an indication of a frightening event, a situation of severe emotional discomfort, or a painful experience in the child’s life. Pale face and loss of consciousness in the child.

And she indicated that psychological experts recommend that parents not stop correcting wrong behavior for fear of seizures, but the psychologically correct behavior is to seek the help of a specialist in psychology or psychotherapy to provide family counseling services and training in behavior modification techniques, and they also recommend consulting a pediatrician to conduct a comprehensive medical examination for the child. If these bouts are repeated frequently to rule out medical causes such as heart and brain disorders, tantrums in adolescents are also a natural part of the progression process and are gradually confined to the late adolescence stage with the physical and emotional maturity of the adolescent.

Rashad pointed out that the second warning in this matter is the recurring outbursts of anger with the unusually violent and sudden behavior of the teenager and attempts to break the rules. The deterioration of the school and social performance of the adolescent are warning signs that should not be tolerated or wait for more behaviors, in accordance with the principle of “prevention is better than cure”, where the psychotherapist provides counseling services on authoritative parenting, and also provides psychological diagnosis using psychological diagnostic tests for adolescence disorders, which are international psychometric tools. Use by a trained clinical psychologist only for the diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder – Depressive Disorder – Oppositional Defiant Disorder – Conduct Disorder – Mood Disorder – Schizoaffective Disorder – Substance Abuse Disorder.

She stressed the importance of a differential and discriminatory diagnosis using standardized psychological measures by a licensed psychotherapist from the Ministry of Health or a trained clinical psychologist, because anger attacks are a common symptom of a large number of mental disorders, including Oppositional Defiant Disorder – Autism Spectrum Disorder and intellectual disabilities – Disorders. Learning – personality disorders (narcissistic, borderline, and schizoid) – post-traumatic stress disorder – attention deficit hyperactivity-impulsive disorder – social anxiety disorders – depression and mood disorders – non-suicidal self-injury disorder.

Regarding the third warning sign, Rashad said that it is the intermittent explosive disorder in adults that occurs in repeated and sudden periods of angry or aggressive behavior or angry verbal outbursts, where the person’s reaction is exaggerated and disproportionate to the situation and occurs suddenly when driving a car or inside the house or Work where the individual exhibits the behavior of throwing and breaking things, or suddenly and impulsively compulsive anger attacks and may negatively affect your relationships, work or studies, and may have social and legal consequences after which the person may feel remorse, remorse and embarrassment.

Rashad called on the various work authorities to take preventive measures to deal with the risks of anger attacks, protect and promote mental health in the work environment for workers, and provide psychological treatment support for workers who suffer from mental health conditions instead of accepting the sudden resignation of the employee or punishing him for low productivity.
