Effect of stroke on the eye
Stroke usually affects the eye with the following problems:
1- Homogenous hemiplegia: causes loss of vision in the right or left half of the visual field.
2- Homogeneous quadruple blindness: leads to loss of vision in the upper or lower quadrants of the visual field.
3- Scotota: causes a blind spot to appear anywhere in the visual field.
4- Eye movement disorders: They occur when the organs and muscles around the eye are affected after a stroke.
5- Nystagmus: It is an involuntary movement of the eyeball.
6- Dry eye: the patient suffers from it, due to his inability to blink, which reduces the production of tears.
7- Light sensitivity: The patient may become sensitive to light, whether it is bright or low.
In addition, stroke may cause other eye problems, such as strabismus, double vision, and cranial nerve palsy.

When does a stroke affect the eye?
There are two areas of the brain that, if affected by a stroke, are more likely to cause vision problems:
The occipital lobe: located in the back of the brain, doctors consider it the “center of vision” because it is responsible for visual processing, by receiving and understanding information from the eyes.
Brain stem: a region of the brain that controls eye movement, balance, stability, and the ability to understand things in the world around a person.

Categories exposed to vision problems resulting from stroke
About 65% of stroke survivors report vision changes or vision loss, but older adults are the worst affected group, according to some research.
Treatment of vision problems resulting from stroke
Some people may regain their sight in the first six months after recovering from a stroke. On the other hand, others need medical intervention to overcome the vision problems caused by it. Treatments include:
Perform some exercises to enhance visual awareness in the blind spots of the eye.
– Wearing medical glasses.
Using eye patches to treat double vision.
The success rates for restoring the ability to see normally after a stroke differ from one patient to another, as shown below:
15% of people with visual field loss recover their vision completely.
30% of people recover part of their visual field.
– 50% of people will not regain the part of the visual field that they have lost.
