Jakarta –
Apart from not exercising enough and preferring to lie down, the habit of staying up late or not getting enough sleep can also trigger obesity. Apart from staying up late can increase interest in snacking at night, this condition can also be triggered by fat metabolism disorders.
“When we sleep at night, the metabolism in our fat works,” explained heart and blood vessel specialist Dr. Dwita Rian Desandri, SpJP(K) in the 2023 World Heart Day Webinar at detikcom, Tuesday (26/9/2023).
“If we wake up in the middle of the night or don’t get enough sleep, our fat metabolism can be disrupted so that we end up getting fat more easily, besides it’s easier to eat at night,” he continued.
In addition, page Healthline explained that when someone lacks sleep, there are hormones that are triggered to increase hunger to consume food, namely ghrelin and leptin. The hormone cortisol can increase if you don’t get enough sleep, which can trigger an increased appetite.
Both hormones, ghrelin and leptin, will be disrupted in their ability to signal hunger and fullness to the body. This is why it is easier for those who like to stay up late to snack at night.
