When it comes to snoring, I find it special that the partner wakes up from the loud noise, but the snorer himself does not. Occasionally the snorer suddenly wakes up, but usually the partner’s bed rest is seriously disrupted. I don’t find it strange that this can cause relationship problems. Fatigue and irritations pile up. Especially if the snorer denies it! By the way, it seems annoying to me if you make loud snoring noises on your first night with a new friend. There is a certain taboo about it, especially among women.
Although I thought that everyone starts snoring as they get older, I don’t see that reflected in the figures. I read percentages between 10 and 25 percent for women and between 20 and 50 percent for men. Age does play a role, but so do body weight, colds and alcohol, just like sleeping on the back. Medicines and smoking can also have an influence. Or an enlarged tonsil or tonsil, even in children.
Often something can be done surgically or with a plastic plate. Aids have probably already been tried: nasal dilators or warning signs (when snoring starts or someone lies on their back).
‘If you don’t notice the snoring yourself, I’m curious how they find out those figures?’
Nowadays, more and more people are reporting to ENT doctors with snoring complaints. Older people, but also young people and people who are not overweight. Perhaps sent by the partner, or out of shame. Or for fear of sleep apnea?
I thought that everyone gets sagging tissues and snores due to old age. However, the percentages mentioned earlier contradict this. But if you don’t notice it yourself, I’m curious how they come up with those figures? Our brain seems to filter the sounds we make ourselves. So with a questionnaire that you have to complete yourself, there will be many false negatives. And it doesn’t seem likely to me that everyone has had a sleep study done.
Recently I saw a beautiful house at a residential program, recently built by a couple in love. During the tour, the interviewer was surprised that everyone had their own bedroom. The reason for this turned out to be the snoring of one of the two. They solved the problem this way.
