Good sleep is essential not only for physical and mental health, but also for maintaining good relationships with family members and peers. If the person sleeping next to you is snoring or restless, it can also affect the other person. This has even led to the trend of sleep divorce. For these reasons, studies indicate that one-third of Americans prefer to sleep in a room alone.
In March 2023, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) conducted a study of 2,005 American adults. 15 percent of those surveyed said they sleep in a different room to avoid nighttime disturbances and disruptions. About 20 percent of married people surveyed follow this practice. A third of those surveyed revealed that a new bedtime is part of their daily routine. This is the practice of going to bed earlier or later than your partner. 15 percent revealed that they sleep with earplugs.

The survey also found that the majority of those who prefer to sleep in a single room, in a guest room or on a sofa are men. 45 percent of the men surveyed said they used to do it occasionally or regularly. The survey also found that the number of people opting for ‘sleep divorce’ varies according to generational differences. 43 percent of Millennials said they sleep in the same room, while 33 percent of Gen-Xers said they sleep in the same room. 22 percent of the Baby-Boomers category revealed that they sleep in a room alone.
Dr Seema Khosla, a pulmonologist and spokesperson of AASM, says that if you sleep in a single room, you will be able to sleep better. “We know that poor sleep can even affect your mood. Sleep-deprived people are more likely to fight with their partners. Some may even hold a slight grudge against the person who disturbs their sleep, which can negatively affect relationships. A good night’s sleep is essential to health and happiness. So it is not surprising that some couples choose to sleep in separate rooms. It is essential for their overall well-being, health and mental happiness”, added Dr Seema Khosla.
