Books – Ahmed Abdel Moneim:

The sudden death of the artist, Mustafa Darwish, at the age of 43, raised many questions about sleep diseases, as the deceased suffered from insomnia and lack of sleep, which he confirmed in a post on his official page on the social networking site “Facebook” only 7 hours before his death.

In the following report, (Masrawy) monitors the sleep diseases that the late artist Mustafa Darwish suffered from, which came as follows: –

What is a sleep disorder?
Sleep disorder is the name given to a group of sleep disorders that cause loss of the ability to sleep or the occurrence of complications during sleep, and it is classified as either an increase in sleep, which means sleepiness during the day or sleeping at night for a long time, or insomnia, which is the loss of the ability to sleep

There are different types of sleep disorders placed under three main groups: endogenous sleep disorders, exogenous sleep disorders, and circadian rhythm sleep disorders.

Endogenous sleep disorders
These are conditions associated with internal sleep mechanisms or associated with other medical disorders related to sleep. Internal sleep disorders include the following types:

– Psychophysiological insomnia: It is a sleep disorder that leads to difficulty in falling asleep or the person staying asleep. Psychological insomnia occurs when a person knows the reasons that prevent him from sleeping. This means that he may worry about the inability to sleep, and thus the situation worsens and the disturbances increase. sleep.

Lethargic sleep: A lethargic sleep disorder affects a person’s ability to control their sleep-wake cycles, which means they may or may not sleep well at night, but often feel drowsy during the day and may sleep at inappropriate times.

Obstructive sleep apnea (sleep apnea): Sleep apnea is a common disorder, often as a result of upper airway weakness during sleep, that causes repeated pauses in breathing resulting in snoring.

Hypersomnia: It is a condition in which a person feels excessive sleepiness during the day, which may occur even after long periods of sleep.

Exogenous sleep disturbances
It results from problems or conditions outside the body, such as the environment, allergies, or different habits followed during the day, including the following:

– Insomnia Food sensitivity: The cause of insomnia does not necessarily have a psychological cause. Insomnia can also occur due to changes in the body due to a certain food that has been eaten, which limits the ability to sleep.

Changes in the regular sleep routine: including not turning off the TV or drinking coffee late in the evening and other measures that may negatively affect the sleep system.

Night Eating Syndrome: Night Eating Syndrome is represented by consuming more than a quarter of the daily amount of food after dinner. This means that there is an increase in appetite hours before going to bed, which leads to the inability to sleep due to the increase in calories and sugar consumed.

Circadian problems
Circadian sleep disorders occur when a lifestyle or environmental change affects the normal circadian sleep rhythm, as in the following cases:

– Darkness in the early hours of winter.
– Changing the time zone, such as changing the geographical area when traveling.
Irregular waking times.
Sleep phase disorder.
– Changes in working hours continuously as a periodic system.
Any disruption or manipulation of the circadian system affects sleepiness, alertness, hunger, body temperature, and hormone levels in the body.

Khaled Montaser calls for attention to “sleep medicine”
Dr. Khaled Montaser called on the Ministry of Health and medical colleges to pay attention to “sleep medicine,” commenting on the sudden death of the artist, Mustafa Darwish, after suffering a heart attack.

Montaser said, in a live broadcast on his official page on the social networking site “Facebook”: “The artist, Mustafa Darwish, smoked cigarettes greedily, and it may be among the reasons that led to his death of a heart attack.”

He added that there is a large phenomenon spread among young people that must be paid attention to, which is “lack of sleep” or insomnia, as there are many young people suffering from the problem of sleep and insomnia, and among them was the artist Mustafa Darwish, who was suffering from insomnia and insufficient sleep, saying: “I knew One of the artist’s friends, Mustafa Darwish, said that he was complaining of insomnia and lack of sleep, and he slept from one to two hours as a maximum a day.

7 diseases caused by lack of sleep
According to the guidelines of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society, adults should sleep at least 7 hours or more per night for optimal health, and not achieving this causes the individual to experience the following problems:

1- Depression and anxiety
Insomnia is an independent risk factor for depression in people of all ages. Sometimes, separate therapies are needed to help with sleep problems and anxiety or depression, but in some cases improving sleep can help improve mood, too.

2- Type 2 diabetes
Poor quality sleep or shorter sleep duration is associated with poor blood sugar control in people with and without diabetes. Poor sleep can increase the risk of diabetes, too.

One recent study found that insomnia may increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by up to 17%.

3- Weight gain and obesity
Laboratory research suggests that not getting enough sleep can lead to metabolic changes associated with obesity. Observational studies looking at sleep duration and rates of obesity have found a link between a chronic metabolic disorder and not getting enough regular rest, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

4- High blood pressure, heart disease and stroke
Studies in large groups of people that compared poor sleep and sleep problems to heart attacks and strokes have shown that poor sleep is linked to heart problems, according to the Heart Foundation. A study published in June 2020 identified a possible mechanism by which poor sleep could be harmful to the heart. It showed that sleep fragmentation, i.e. frequent awakenings during the night that disrupts sleep, was associated with arterial inflammation.

There is also evidence linking sleep disturbances to heart problems. People with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) have a higher risk of high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke.

5- Kidney problems
The link between sleep and kidney health has not been as strongly established as the link between sleep and other chronic conditions. Although there are some preliminary studies, the relationship needs further exploration, but chronic insomnia has been linked to chronic kidney disease and its development.

6- Cognitive disorders
Injury due to lack of sleep or lack of sleep does not appear immediately, but it can lead to changes that appear later in life, such as Alzheimer’s disease and disorders of cognitive processes.

7- Poor immune function
Not getting enough quality sleep can affect the immune system, there is evidence that getting plenty of sleep can benefit the immune system and that poor sleep is linked to infection susceptibility.
