The Impact of Rodents on War: From Ancient Times to Modern Warfare

For the ultimate outcome of the war in Ukraine, there is one factor that doesn’t get much attention, but which is actually a huge problem for soldiers on the front: mice.

In the trenches, an influx of rodents has been reported (by both sides) which, after the invasion, began to feast on the abandoned crops in the war zones. Warm weather is another factor that helps their population, UNIAN agency writes.

Now with the cold approaching, rats are looking for warmth and food, and that is why they are heading to the military. Already last fall, Russian military bloggers began to complain about animals, even blaming them for the failures of the Russian army. Rodents attack not only food, but also tobacco, ammunition and military equipment. They also spread tularemia. The Ukrainian public then accepted these writings with derision, but now the mice are proving to be a problem for the ZSU as well.

The influence of rodents on wars is much greater than people realize. During the Middle Ages, rodents became a symbol of disease, plague and misery. Medieval military strategists also used them as biological weapons, hurling barrels of infected rodents into cities and fortresses, causing epidemics. World War II also saw many documented cases of tanks being disabled by mice.

Rodents destroyed the electronics of many German tanks in the Battle of Stalingrad. Mice are still used nowadays. In Mozambique they were used as sappers. Modern mines may react to a dog, but for rats they are completely safe. Also, rodents’ sense of smell is just as good as dogs’. In military strategy, some special forces use the so-called “mouse tactics”: creating narrow passages and tunnels in an urban environment to neutralize the enemy. Further proof of the importance of mice in military science.

The main recommendation for rodent control is to keep litter and supplies as far away from the sleeping area as possible. But in the context of hostilities, discarded debris can reveal the enemy’s position. That is why mice have become a huge problem in Ukraine.
