The Impact of Review Bombing on Malayalam Film Industry: Perspectives from Industry Insiders

Director Arun Gopi said that what comes through social media in the name of movie reviews are not opinions but expressions of opinion. Arun Gopi says that farces shown in the name of review are very bad and there is no point in complaining or complaining about it. Producer Sandeep Senan openly criticized the content of the producer who paid for it and did not agree with the method of generating income through it. Sandeep Senan asks if the aim is to comment, can we criticize without monetizing it? Some movies will be good and some movies will be bad. Screenwriter Manoj Ramsingh clarified that it is a very bad trend to portray many people as deformed. They were responding to Manorama Online about review bombing.

Recently, ‘Review Bombing’ is an active word in the discussion circles of Malayalis. Even the court has marked the movie by sharing negative reviews through social media as ‘review bombing’. Police say that everyone has the right to express their opinion about the film, but if there is a deliberate act of self-murder or criminal interference like blackmailing for a negative review, a complaint can be filed. As the Diwali releases continue to hit the theaters, review bombing is once again the talk of the town. Negative reports on the day of release can even affect a film’s later releases. Such reports often lead to films leaving theaters less than a week later and the number of shows being reduced. Do online reviews determine a movie’s sales? Is there a protocol for review? to responses.

Arun Gopi: The film that we thought of making in our minds has now been made. People may or may not like that movie. Many people are now calling saying that they have seen the movie and liked it. Along with that, there are people who have given negative comments about the movie. Many people have different tastes. Everyone watches movies according to their interests. Then it is natural to see differences of opinion. Many people like movies. Their opinion also reaches us. Those who don’t like it can voice their opinions. It is their freedom. Everyone has a right to it.

But we also see people who show different kinds of anger in the form of opinions. They make comments as if they are big people. Some of the reviews are sarcastic. It is when they see that they do not feel that others are human. The farces that are shown in the name of review are very bad. It is everyone’s culture. These skits are not like we are making a statement. Many of them are sheer circuses. Many people are now insulting people in the name of review. Everyone reacts according to their own thoughts and standards. It is part of everyone’s culture. There is no point in complaining or complaining about it. I feel like this is the case here.

Review is the way of life of many people today. And they all do it for money. It generalizes by making very bad comments about the movie that is meant for all audiences. And they force it on people. I think they are capable of doing great things over time. I hope that such creations will come from them. Other than that, what can I say now? I’m talking about comments. I want to clarify once again that I am not talking about comments. I understand that the responsible people have started taking action from the Cinema Association.

Sandeep Senan: The viewer is free to express his opinion. It can be positive or negative. But today many people have turned it into a source of income. Often the reviewer who reviews the movie gets a good income. They are doing this which has caused loss to many producers. So I disagree with turning the paid producer’s content into the reviewer’s income. For example, I disagree with monetizing one of my films by saying it is bad. As a result, a manufacturer loses money. A film is the result of the efforts of many people. But regardless of that, many people comment that most of the movies are bad. Now there are people who review without asking the producer for money. But ultimately, it all comes down to the same thing. The result is a financial loss to the manufacturer. Because of that, most of the movie is a huge loss.

Also, many people get two to three lakh views on YouTube for reviewing. They monetize it. This is forcing the opinion of a few on the majority of the audience. When the reviewer earns two to three lakhs, there is a situation here where some good movies do not even get one lakh rupees back from the theatre. It is impossible to agree that a reviewer is the ‘voice’ of a group of people without thinking that it is someone who gives his opinion. Due to such reactions even an average film does not get space here. Reviewers can comment without being monetized. Isn’t that actually a bad way to make money?

Malayalam is an industry that brings the best content in India itself. At a time when everyone is watching Malayalam, with such bad reviews, decisions are made that only average movies should be shown here. A reviewer once said that there is a thrill in watching a movie and reviewing it. Let me say that, but I have to say that it is enough not to turn it into cash. New content creators are turning such bad trends into their energy as they go from being a representative of the audience to voicing their opinion and monetizing it.

There is not only review bombing but also vote digging. There is a growing trend these days of voting through apps like Book My Show and giving positives to some movies and negatives to others. Due to differences of opinion on matters like politics, there is a way of attacking the films of many people.

Everyone is free to express their opinion. When a bunch of people turn their sweat into content and then review it and say it’s a bad piece of work, it’s a very bad trend. By doing so, the actual income for the content is reduced. It has often felt that many people sleep in a theater yard in Kochi. No one thinks they’re going through the trouble of standing on top of the sweat of a few people, giving a minute and a half review and costing the producer money. A group of manufacturers are trying to get legal protection from this.

Manoj Ramsingh: I believe that a work of art exists only when it has comments. Every work of art is a product these days. Everyone has opinions about that product. Everyone on the creative side welcomes the review. There is a trend in film reviews today that is not seen in any other art form. Reviewers are turning the film into a co-content or a sub-content. It’s not like an opinion. Many people have been seen dressing up as clowns to distort a movie. When a movie comes out, everyone who has worked with it or loves the movie is sure to rate it. On the other hand, some people prepare such contents only to despise others. Others say the entire contents of the movie in the form of a review. It’s sometimes just to get views for their content.

Manoj Ramsingh

Some movies will be good and some movies will be bad. It is a very bad trend to portray many people as defective because of it. A review is a good or bad opinion about a product. It is certainly wrong under the law to create content that insults or demeans the people who created it or the people who starred in it. Many movies are often reviewed in such a way that no one should watch them. Now if they present the movies like this for their reach, then they should buy the rights of the producer of that movie. Because that product is his only.

All these reviews are by-products of the movie product. Full rights over it belong to that producer. It is his intellectual property. Everyone has a right to review. Many movies are likely to be hits and flops. Its loss and profit are with the producer. But this reviewer also gets the profit of this sub-content coming through YouTube. All these fall under the category of piracy. None of these are allowed by law. Both are wrongful under intellectual property right and under piracy law. I strongly disagree with taking a producer’s content and making another sub-content to their detriment.
