Foods that lead to depression and memory loss. Some favorite foods of many of us have a negative effect on mood, lead to depression and deterioration of cognitive function, especially memory, according to neurologists.
Dr. Vyacheslav Pavlov, neurologist, says, referring to the results of a study, that food products with refined carbohydrates are extremely dangerous for the body. Examples of these include breakfast cereals, pasta, pastries, pizza dough, sweet desserts, white bread, etc.
A team of researchers examined the relationship between refined carbohydrate intake and cognitive performance in a group of 95 healthy young adults between the ages of 20 and 30. Out of 95 participants, 48 were women and 47 were men.
“Consumption of products made from refined carbohydrates negatively affects cognitive function in both sexes. Eating foods that often have a high glycemic index is associated with reduced brain function,” says the neurologist.
Since the second half of the 20th century, there has been a massive change in diet in the Western world, with a dramatic increase in the consumption of refined carbohydrates, leading to a number of harmful health effects. Processed foods were developed with the advent of highly processed and refined foods. Carbohydrates are the main source of fuel for the brain. They are broken down into glucose, which supports overall cognitive function. However, not all carbohydrates are created equal.
“Refined carbohydrates, on the other hand, are considered ’empty’ calories because the processing process removes almost all of their fiber, vitamins and minerals,” explains the expert.
Refined carbohydrates affect not only cognitive function, but also mental health. The team scrutinized data from more than 70,000 postmenopausal women. The data included the level of depression, the type of carbohydrates consumed and the GI of the foods consumed by the participants. In the study, they observed that carbohydrate intake raised blood sugar levels to varying degrees, depending on the type of food eaten.
The more refined the carbohydrate, the higher its score on the GI scale, which ranges from zero to 100. The researchers found that progressively higher GI scores resulting from consumption of added sugars and refined grains were associated with a risk increased depression in postmenopausal women.
“Refined foods like white bread, white rice and sodas trigger a hormonal response in the body that lowers blood sugar. This response can also cause or worsen mood swings, fatigue and other symptoms of depression,” says the neurologist.
Moderate obesity caused by a diet rich in refined carbohydrates can contribute to the development of anxiety and depressive behavior after stress, the specialist also explains, according to Actualno, cited by doctorulzilei.ro.
