The Impact of Pohlreich’s Duel of Restaurants on Restaurant Attendance

Nova is not yet planning a continuation of the show Pohlreich’s Duel of Restaurants, which had its television premiere in the spring. At the same time, viewership met expectations and the winner of the first series, restaurant Salabka, the competition significantly helped to increase attendance.

“Currently, the filming of the second series is not going on. But it doesn’t mean that it won’t happen sometime in the future and that we’re not thinking about it,” explains the station’s creative producer Eva Krutáková and emphasizes the complexity of preparing the show, which was lent its face by chef Zdeněk Pohlreich.

“The preparation is quite demanding and its main goal is to discover and show the audience interesting concepts within the Czech Republic. So we are giving ourselves space to let other restaurants and personalities of domestic gastronomy grow,” says the producer of one of the three most watched domestic television channels.

According to her, the cooking show met with a positive response from the audience. The show reached an average of 20.75 percent of viewers currently watching television in the age group of fifteen to fifty-four.

The show reportedly also found its fans on the Voyo platform. But the television did not say how many new subscribers it brought to the video library. “We do not publish specific numbers beyond the total number of users,” says Nova spokesperson Aneta Veselská.

In the first series, twelve top companies presented themselves in several categories. These were, for example, the restaurants Di Nuovo, Dock House, the Vietnamese bistro Nhà hai hành or the business Salabka, which won the first series when it defeated Long Story Short from Olomouc.

The chef of the winning restaurant and vineyard, Petr Kunc, boasts that thanks to participation in the competition, the company’s attendance has increased by sixty percent. “It helped us tremendously, the show had incredible power in this regard,” he says happily.

He gave his nod to participating in the competition mainly because he enjoyed the British version of the show Ramsay’s Best Restaurant, which is run by chef Gordon Ramsay.

“I knew it would be a battle of professional restaurants and it would have a professional level. It was a completely different format and I would say that the Czech production managed to shoot the show even better than the British one,” says Kunc.

Petr Heneš, head chef of Olomouc’s Long Story Short, praises the participation in the competition. “Thanks to that, crowds of people began to flow to us. While we used to have full reservations for a week in advance, now we are full for two months,” he adds.

This year, they had enough guests even at the beginning of the holidays, which is usually a weak period in terms of attendance. Now, on the other hand, the Olomouc finalists have become a sought-after tourist destination. At the same time, Heneš was previously rather skeptical of similar television competitions.

The show aroused great expectations also due to the fact that the television transfer of the year took place in its background: Zdeněk Pohlreich decided to switch to the competition after more than ten years of work on Prima, which made him famous.
