The Impact of Parenthood on Relationship Satisfaction: A Study on Fathers’ Happiness Levels

Fathers are (on average) a lot more unhappy with their relationship/marriage when the first child is born.

To a large group of men in Germany how satisfied they were with their relationship and their partner. The maximum score that could be achieved was 27.

The study, published in the journal PLOS One, found that men reported high levels of happiness — a score of 20.3 out of 27 — before their first baby was born, but that score dropped to 18.8 eight weeks after birth and to 16.6 14 months later.

By the time their baby turns two, their satisfaction level remains low at 16.7 and there is virtually no recovery.

However, their ‘relationship satisfaction’ seems to recover after having a second child.

Second fathers start from a lower happiness level in their relationships, with a score of 17.5 before the birth of their second child, and also see a dip (to 16.3) eight weeks after birth. However, their satisfaction level starts to rise, reaching 17.4 at 14 months and 18.1 at two years, making them feel happier than before their second child was born.
