The Impact of Parental Criticism on Depressed Adolescents

Jakarta (ANTARA) – In contrast to generally healthy adolescents, depressed adolescents were found to be more sensitive to criticism than praise from their parents, according to a recent study published in Psychological Medicine and cited by the Times of India, Wednesday.

The impact of this adolescent depression was determined through measurements of increased brain activity and self-reported mood assessments.

Teenage depression is a serious mental health problem that is also quite common, and one of them can cause them to have low self-esteem.

Although there are many possible causes of adolescent depression, negative interactions between parents and adolescents have been linked to the development of this depression.

Lisanne Van Houtum of the University of Leiden in the Netherlands and her colleagues investigated the emotional and brain responses of depressed adolescents to input from their parents, both negative and positive.

Researchers recruited 20 Dutch adolescents aged 13.5 to 18 years who were diagnosed with dysthymia (a mild and chronic form of depression) or major depressive disorder (a severe form of acute depression).

A total of 59 healthy youth aged 12 to 18 years without depression were also recruited. For both groups, parents of teenagers were also invited to participate in the study.

The researchers found that depressed and healthy teens experienced a decrease in mood after being criticized and an increase in mood after being praised, compared to neutral feedback.

However, the rate of improvement in mood after praise was not significant in depressed adolescents compared to healthy adolescents.

“Adolescents who are depressed are very sensitive to parental criticism, they think badly of themselves, and are less reliant on self-image when faced with parental criticism,” says Van Houtum.

Van Houtum said parental involvement can help in the treatment of childhood depression. He advises parents to be able to identify and acknowledge the valuable characteristics of their children, and by providing support for the development of a positive self-view.
