TIMESINDONESIA, JAKARTA – An orthopedic specialist who graduated from the University of Indonesia, Dr. Yoshi Pratama Djaja, SpOT (K), revealed the significant impact of osteoporosis on the hip and other parts of the body. The hip, along with the wrist and spine, is epidemiologically affected by osteoporosis quite seriously.
Dr Yoshi, who also serves as Head of the Data and Information Technology Division of the Indonesian Orthopedic Association (IOA), explained that although the exact reason why osteoporosis affects these three areas is still not fully understood, it is likely related to the special morphology and function of these three parts.
Reporting from Antara, Monday (16/10/2023), Dr Yoshi said that the importance of paying attention to the pelvic bones, in particular, is that this area not only experiences pressure when supporting the body’s weight, but also experiences tension, which triggers high bone turnover.
Bone turnover is the process in which old bone resorbs and is replaced by new bone in the pelvic area.
“Osteoporosis disrupts the balance between bone formation and resorption, which can have serious impacts on pelvic bone health,” he said.
To prevent osteoporosis in the hip bones and maintain bone health into old age, Dr Yoshi recommends regular physical activity, such as exercise, as well as adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D, because this is very helpful in preventing osteoporosis.
For those who have experienced a hip fracture due to osteoporosis, he recommends hip replacement surgery to restore function to the broken structure. The goal is that the patient can immediately return to moving, sitting, standing and walking as before.
Dr Yoshi emphasized the importance of prompt surgery and effective rehabilitation in improving the quality of life of patients with hip fractures.
“Immediate surgery for hip fractures (due to osteoporosis) and good rehabilitation play an important role in this,” said the orthopedic specialist, Hip & Knee Adult Reconstruction, Trauma and Sports Consultant at Pondok Indah Hospital – Bintaro Jaya.
