We lead an increasingly sedentary life, and obesity has increased among Romanians. Few people exercise regularly and pay attention to their diet. Nutritionist Mihaela Bilic spoke extensively about this problem, which affects more and more people.
“Obesity and sedentary lifestyle, or food versus exercise
Who affects our health more seriously, obesity or sedentarism? Recent studies show us that the negative effect of extra pounds has a major impact on heart health and cannot be compensated by exercise. Until now, we used to believe that regular sports and a good physical condition can neutralize the risks of obesity-related diseases.
The European Society of Cardiology points out that we cannot be overweight and healthy at the same time!
It is the first cross-sectional national analysis carried out in Spain on a number of 526,000 adults with an average age of 42 years. Depending on the level of physical activity and body weight, they were divided into 3 groups: 42% had a normal weight, 41% were overweight and 18% were obese.
The monitored risk factors were diabetes, high cholesterol and hypertension, elements directly related to heart health. The study showed an increased cardiovascular risk in the case of overweight and obese people compared to those of normal weight, regardless of the physical activity practiced.
The participants who were obese and exercised had a double risk of high cholesterol in the blood, a 4 times higher risk of being diabetic and a 5 times higher risk of being hypertensive, compared to those with a normal weight, but sedentary. “Our observations dismantle the myth that an active lifestyle can cancel the negative effects of extra pounds and obesity,” says the author of the study.
These conclusions raise an alarm signal regarding the health policy and the recommendations made to the population, the number one priority must be weight loss, it matters more than the physical condition. It is important to fight against obesity and sedentarism, but weight loss must remain the priority objective!
There is no doubt, movement has real health benefits, the more active we are, the better. There are even studies that show that being sedentary has a greater negative impact than smoking, diabetes or cardiovascular diseases. For our health, it is good to pay attention to extra pounds and physical condition. But if we had to choose the lesser evil, it’s better to be sedentary than overweight!”, wrote Mihaela Bilic on Facebook.
