The Impact of Nutritional Deficiency on Children Can’t be Repaired

VIVA – Deficiency nutrition is a common problem that can have a negative impact on health, both in the short and long term. Including in Indonesia, where there are more than 1 in every 4 children experiencing stunting due to lack of nutrition.

Malnutrition includes various problems in children’s growth, such as underweight, stunting, wasting or low body weight compared to height, and micronutrient deficiencies.

Pediatrician Division of Nutrition and Metabolic Diseases RSUP Fatmawati, Dr. dr. Lanny C. Gultom, Sp.A(K), said, if not treated at an early age, this condition can have irreparable consequences.

“Therefore, intervention at an early age must be carried out immediately to prevent stunted growth, low immune system, and suboptimal cognitive development in the future,” he said during the Abbot Virtual Media Briefing – Launch of New PediaSure Formula: Support Growth Real Children of Indonesia, which will be held on Thursday, October 14, 2021.

Doctor Lanny added, malnutrition can occur in all children, regardless of their socio-economic conditions and geography. Therefore, it is important for parents to be aware of their child’s growth and nutritional status.

“The current pandemic situation has also made the fulfillment of nutritional needs and regular height and weight measurements in health facilities more limited for parents. Therefore, consistent support is needed in terms of fulfilling child nutrition,” he said.
