The Impact of Neglecting to Change Your Electric Toothbrush Head on Your Oral Health

The number of times you change your electric toothbrush head becomes a determining factor in your oral health, as this type of brush is becoming more and more popular.

Dr Nigel Carter, chief executive of the British Oral Health Foundation, said more than a third of electric toothbrush users are more likely to develop gum disease, according to the Daily Express.

Carter attributed this to a study of more than 1,000 electric toothbrush owners in the United Kingdom. The survey found that about 42 percent of them did not change their toothbrush heads regularly, so they were more susceptible to gum disease.

Dental professionals recommend replacing heads every 3 months to avoid ineffective cleaning and deteriorating oral health, because old toothbrush heads can increase your risk of oral health problems, such as plaque buildup.

And the problem does not stop there as this can lay the foundation for gum disease and tooth decay, Carter said: A worn-out toothbrush cannot clean your teeth properly and may damage your gums.

One of the problems with not changing the toothbrush head is that the bristles get splayed, making them unable to clean the teeth properly.

And a growing body of evidence continues to suggest that gum disease can be linked to serious health problems, ranging from heart disease to dementia.
