These days, Microsoft is sending out an informational e-mail in which it informs OneDrive users about a change in how images are counted towards capacity. Cloud storage treats images in the same way as other files, so the size of the image is deducted from the capacity. But before long, the picture will be taken twice.
This will apply to images that put in the gallery or virtual albums. A gallery for managing digital memories creates separate part of OneDrive. You can add photos from different folders to albums and share them.
Informational e-mail brings a lot of confusion. We don’t know if an image will count as many times as how many albums you add it to. Pictures can be in multiple albums. Microsoft clearly writes that not only images in albums, but also in the gallery will be taken from the capacity of OneDrive. But all images stored in OneDrive appear in the gallery, regardless of whether they are included in albums.
In practice, this would mean that all images in OneDrive will be pulled from capacity at least twice. Potentially more than once. It is also possible for the images in the albums to be independent of the regular OneDrive storage. That would justify them being counted twice. In that case, deleting it from the regular folder might mean that the image will still be available in the photo album.
Gallery is a separate and large part of OneDrive
By default, the Microsoft 365 consumer package allocates one terabyte of cloud space to each user account. You can buy additional capacity, at most another terabyte for $10 a month.
The new rules will apply from October 16, 2023, and will be implemented gradually. Some accounts may suddenly exceed the purchased capacity of OneDrive, which Microsoft will solve by allocating bonus space for a year. This will not paralyze the account acutely, but in the long run you will either have to pay more or delete older data.
It is not clear whether it will add the same capacity to each account, or if the capacity will be individualized. We don’t even know if the bonus capacity will be added only to accounts that are at risk of exceeding the capacity.
In the e-mail, the company states that it wants to improve the user experience with Microsoft 365. It is not clear how the double counting of images in the capacity of OneDrive is supposed to be better. Apparently more we’ll find out on October 3rd. Leaker account @_h0x0d_ has released a short promotional video that teases the event falling on the October date. In the center is the OneDrive logo and the main motive of the organization. The text in the video entices you to learn more about what’s new on OneDrive.
