Going hard with MDMA or XTC is best known from a party or festival. Although MDMA, or a derivative thereof, used to be in pre-workouts as well. That is why we are curious what exactly such a famous pill does to your body in combination with your sporting goals. For this we spoke Tom Bart, Senior Prevention Expert bee Jellinek. Tom tells exactly what happens to your sports performance when you use MDMA.
Wat is MDMA?
According to Tom, you can divide drugs into three different categories:
Uppers/stimulants: Ecstasy, amphetamine, cocaine. This gives you more energy; everything in your body starts to work harder. Downers/narcotics: GHB, alcohol, heroin. This makes everything work slower in your body. Trippers/perception-altering drugs. These drugs have psychological and psychiatric effects, but have little effect on your body.
Because you don’t want to get slower during exercise, you quickly focus on it uppers. MDMA is zo’n upper.
To what extent does MDMA improve your sports performance?
By using MDMA you have more energy and you are more active. In addition, you can continue longer and more intensively than usual. For example, you could walk or dance a lot more than usual,’ says Tom. ‘However, this mainly applies to activities that you feel like doing at that moment. Sport, for example, is something you may not be looking forward to at all, then you can be easily distracted and unmotivated,’ he confirms.
‘In addition, you sleep little due to the use of MDMA and it affects your hormone balance. Your fluid and energy metabolism change, making it bad for your condition, immune system and muscle building. In addition, many proteins and therefore muscles are broken down. With a high dose of MDMA, you also lose a lot of muscle mass,’ says the prevention expert.
What Happens If You Take MDMA While Losing Weight?
The ‘A’ in MDMA stands for amphetamine. Amphetamine or speed was often used as a slimming aid in the 1940s, but turned out not to be very good for you at all. Besides the fact that use is dangerous and causes a high heart rate and blood pressure, it is certainly a very bad way to lose weight in the long term, “says Tom.
You eat less
You may have had less appetite during use, but afterwards you have a great need for calories. “It’s like you’ve run a marathon,” says Tom. ‘You also need the calories more than you need to recover. It is often accompanied by unhealthy eating, as many experience a feeling of a hangover. To lose weight you have to be constant with food and exercise and that simply doesn’t go well with drug use’, concludes Tom.
