The Impact of Long-Term COVID: New Study Reveals Shocking Statistics

We still know few details about long-term COVID and its impact on health, but a recent large-scale study by British and American researchers indicates that about one in seven people in the United States has experienced long-term COVID by end of 2022.

According to the study coordinated by researchers from University College London and Dartmouth in the US, the long-term experience of COVID is associated with anxiety, low mood and the persistence of problems such as fatigue, reduced mobility and difficulties with memory, concentration or understanding. The data was published in the journal PLOS ONE on November 2.

The risk of anxiety and low mood appeared to be lower for those who had been vaccinated, including those with prolonged COVID. Researchers analyzed data from 461,550 participants who responded to a US Census Bureau survey between June and December 2022.

The study defined long-term COVID as proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO), meaning the persistence or development of new symptoms at least three months after the initial infection. About 14% of respondents indicated that they had long-standing COVID, and half of them (7% of the total) mentioned that they still had symptoms when they answered the survey.

The study suggests that one in three people who have had COVID-19 could develop long-lasting symptoms of COVID. Limitations of the research include that it relies on self-reporting and that some people interviewed may have had COVID-19 without knowing it.

The results show that those with long-standing COVID are more likely to report negative affect (anxiety, depression, worry or lack of interest) and problems with physical mobility, memory, concentration and understanding.

This condition was more common among women, white people, middle-aged people, and those with lower income or education. It was also more common among those who had severe symptoms during the initial infection with COVID-19.
