The Impact of Layoffs: Employees Struggle with Increased Workload and Declining Well-Being

Workplace survey|The tide of layoffs makes employees have to take on more workload. Half of the wage earners often feel the same pressure

Has your physical and mental health and overall quality of life improved or decreased compared to last year? If you answer the latter or think the same, congratulations, you agree with two-thirds of the interviewed employees. However, your boss may not necessarily think the same way you do, according to a new report from Deloitte and Workplace Intelligence published in March.

The survey report interviewed 3,150 employees. The report revealed that many employees still face low quality of life. Most of the interviewed employees said that their physical and mental well-being had deteriorated or remained unchanged compared with last year; on the contrary, more than three-quarters managed However, the management believes that employee well-being has improved in the past year.

“This shows that management is out of touch with the realities of employees,” commented managing partner Dan Schawbel. “Management is so focused on the big picture of the company that it’s hard to get a full picture of employee well-being.”

Work is the biggest obstacle to physical and mental health

The survey reveals that interviewed employees attach great importance to physical and mental well-being. Nearly 84% of the respondents said that improving their mental, physical and financial health will be their number one goal this year, and 74% of the respondents even said that physical and mental health is more important than promotion.

However, overtime work, work pressure and heavy workload are still the biggest obstacles for employees to improve their physical and mental health. Nearly two-thirds of the respondents indicated that it was difficult for them to break away from work or even take time off work, and only half of the employees could use up all their holidays every year to have a good rest. About half of employees also said that they often feel tired (52%) or stressed (49%).

Dan Schawbel admitted that the wave of layoffs in the past year has made the overall situation worse: “Employees already have a heavy workload, and the wave of layoffs in the past six months has made the remaining employees need to take on even more workload.”

Companies should take responsibility, otherwise it will be difficult to attract talents

The report pointed out that companies should pay more attention to the mental and physical health of employees, and the report even mentioned that more and more employees are considering leaving their jobs in search of better well-being and physical and mental health.

Team leaders have the most contact with employees on a daily basis and play a key role in improving employee wellbeing. However, the report found that team leaders also face many obstacles in this regard, such as strict working hours requirements of the company itself and a lack of appropriate skills. As a result, only 42 percent of managers say they feel fully equipped to help their companies improve the health and wellbeing of their employees.

The report recommends that companies commit to building “human resource sustainability,” which includes providing opportunities to develop skills and careers, and adopting new practices that support employee wellbeing, such as ensuring fair pay and experimenting with a four-day workweek. These practices can improve employee wellness, upskill employees, and give employees a greater sense of purpose and belonging.

Schawbel warns that if companies don’t improve employee benefits or develop human resource sustainability, it may be difficult to compete for mission-critical talent.
