Citing a study published in ≪Physiology & Behavior≫, neuroscience news website ‘Cypost’ cited the results of a study published in ≪Physiology & Behavior≫ that excessive intake of high-fat, high-sugar foods containing a lot of fat and sugar can lead to memory dependent on the hippocampus. It has been reported that performance may deteriorate.
The hippocampus is a part of the brain that plays a role in regulating long-term memory, spatial concepts, and emotional behavior.
Researchers at the University of Michigan Dearborn asked 340 participants to perform various tasks related to memory and executive function along with a questionnaire on eating habits. Through this, participants’ attention switching ability, cognitive flexibility, cognitive processing speed, and inhibitory control ability were measured. The participants were mostly women, aged 18 to 35 years.
The study found that people who reported a high intake of high-fat, high-sugar foods scored lower on all memory tasks known to use a lot of the hippocampus area of the brain. In particular, it showed a slow appearance in cognitive processing speed.
“This result suggests that a high-fat and high-sugar diet can affect memory deterioration,” the researchers said. “There is a need to improve modern diets that can impair important cognitive functions.”
Modern diets are mostly prepared with minimally processed ingredients, as these processed foods often contain added sugars and fats. These additives enhance the taste but also increase the calorie content.
