The Impact of Heat Wave on Livestock: Challenges Faced by Breeders

Livestock also suffer from the heat, especially when it lasts for a long time like now. Breeders are therefore already hard at work fitting out stables or adapting feed and hydration. Illustration in the Lot.

The heat wave episode at the moment, the hottest of the summer of 2023, is due to the establishment above the country of a heat dome, that is to say “a vast anticyclonic zone at any stage of the atmosphere which traps the already hot air and heats it up by compression, a bit like a bicycle pump”, explains Météo France.

While the peak of the heat wave is expected “between Monday and Wednesday” before a possible drop in temperatures on Thursday, the authorities have multiplied health prevention messages, especially in large cities, which are experiencing the formation of numerous heat islands, affecting in the first place the most vulnerable audiences, and put in place systems to hear from fragile and isolated people. If the heat wave requires caution, it is also a source of discomfort for animals on farms. Breeders have to deal with this and above all ensure that their herds are well hydrated.
