Heat has direct effects on human health, including causing diseases such as heat exhaustion and heatstroke, and other more serious health complications such as strokes and heart attacks. The effects of heat are not limited to physical health, but mental health as well.

The Consulto reviews in the following report the most prominent effects of hyperthermia on mental health, according to “Very well health” and “The Cleveland Clinic”.

Some studies have monitored the exacerbation of many mental and psychological health problems with heat waves, and identified this as follows:

Sharp mood changes.

– temper tantrums.

– Violence.

Anxiety disorder.

– Sleep disorders.

Humans cannot tolerate temperatures above 42 degrees for a long time, and prolonged heat waves can affect mental health, and this may be due to several factors:

Mental health patients and hyperthermia

People with mental illness do not tolerate heat as well as others because of changes and abnormalities already occurring in the brain. Research has found that patients with psychiatric disorders are at increased risk of physical and psychological complications from exposure to elevated temperatures.

Higher temperatures have been linked to increased aggressive behavior and violence, and research has also reported increased hospitalizations and emergency room admissions for people with mental health conditions or mental illnesses and increased rates of suicide.

Air pollution and high temperatures

Air pollution arises from many sources, but 85% of air pollution is caused by the use of fossil fuels. Particulate matter air pollution can travel to the brain in blood vessels and nerve cells where it causes damage to inflammatory cells, affecting mental health. The effects of pollution are more serious in the summer with the extreme heat and humidity in the weather.

Air pollution has been shown to increase the risk of autism, reduce cognitive ability, cause more ADHD and behavioral problems in children, and increase the risk of dementia. It also increases the risk of depression, suicide, Parkinson’s disease, and possibly psychosis.

Infectious diseases and hyperthermia

High temperature and humidity are a fertile environment for the growth and spread of infectious diseases, such as malaria, dengue fever, and other diseases. Exposure to severe health problems that require long-term treatment, hospitalization for treatment, or the loss of a loved one as a result of exposure to these health problems may affect mental health.
