According to data from the Brazilian Association of Meat Processing Plants (Abrafrigo), the drop in beef prices worldwide is behind the reduction in the value of beef exports made by Brazil during the month of October. . According to the association, the big problem for exports in 2023 is the prices that importers pay for Brazilian products. In October 2022, average Brazilian beef prices were $5,228 per ton. In October 2023 there was a drop to $4,078 per ton.
China remains the main importer of Brazilian beef so far this year, representing 49% of Brazilian sales. From January to October, China was responsible for beef revenues of $4,723 million, which represented a 32.3% drop in its beef revenues through 2022. Average prices fell from $6,621 per ton in 2022 to $4,819 this year. There was also a 7% drop in volume, from 1,054,088 tons in 2022 to 980,016 tons in 2023.
The United States continues to be the second largest importer of Brazilian beef, going from a share of 8% of the total in 2022 to 11.8% in October 2023. The movement grew by 49.1%, going from 158,260 tons in 2022 to 235,903 tons in 2023, but revenue fell by 0.9% due to reduced product prices.
Chile is the third importer, moving 82,314 tons in 2023 against 63,927 tons in 2022 (+28.8%). Revenue went from $322 million last year to $400 million this year (+24%).
Hong Kong ranked fourth, importing 82,350 tonnes in the year to October 2002 and 94,857 tonnes in 2023 (+15%), but revenue fell 0.1%, from $290 million to $289 million.
In total, 74 countries increased their imports until October while another 96 reduced their purchases.
