On October 20, the German Bundestag passed a bill according to which the toll for using roads and highways for trucks will increase significantly. The increase is to be 83%. for vehicles meeting the Euro VI standard, up to 35.4 cents per kilometer. This is not the end, however, because from July 2024, the fee will also apply to trucks weighing up to 3.5 tons. Currently, tolls have to be paid only for cars weighing over 7.5 tons, DW reports.

Deutsche Welle talked about this topic with representatives of the Polish transport industry. Magdziak, who also sits on the board of Transport i Logistyka Polska, emphasizes that the increase will take place “month by month”. – There is no time for conversations with clients and accurate calculations – he points out.
This means that the transport industry will probably have to raise prices for its customers. Magdziak adds that such a change should be spread over time. His company will have to allocate PLN 18 million more annually for this purpose to cover the costs of driving on German highways.. In his opinion, many companies in the industry will not make profits because of this.
Both Piotr Magdziak and Krzysztof Babiński – the owner of a forwarding company from the Pomeranian Voivodeship – believe that the increases will be passed on to the clients of these companies. Price increases may amount to 8-10%. Ultimately, this may also affect the prices of products for consumers.
Increase in motorway tolls in Germany. Austria will be next
– The increase is very large. I don’t know if Germans even realize what impact it may have on their economy and the rest of Europe – says Babiński in an interview with Deutsche Welle. As DW points out, the reform is also criticized by the German carrier industry. In this country, 85 percent goods are transported by trucks.
Germany is expected to receive an additional approx. EUR 30.5 billion in budget revenues from the increase in the fee in 2024-2027. The money is to be spent on infrastructure development. DW adds that another country that is preparing for a similar change in regulations is Austria, which, however, plans to gradually introduce fee increases.
