To lose weight, you need to eat fewer calories than you burn. But what happens to your body if you don’t eat at all for 24 hours?

In this period perhaps the most searched word on the web is diet. Many people are looking for the perfect diet to lose those extra pounds accumulated during the winter months.

To lose weight by now it is clear, you need to review your eating habits first of all, and go into a caloric deficit, or introduce fewer calories than those burned.

For some time now, a regime called “intermittent fasting” which promises to make you lose excess pounds.

It’s only for a limited time, but if you don’t eat for 24 hours what happens to your body? Let’s find out the truth.

What happens to your body if you fast for 24 hours?

Let’s first see what intermittent fasting means and what happens. Stefano Erzegovesi, director of the Center for eating disorders at the San Raffaele hospital in Milan and author of the book Fasting for all explains on blog.prolon: “Basically, the time window is narrowed and we eat, for example, only from 8 to 16 or from 9 to 17. Despite the use of technology, we continue to function with a biological clock that follows the rhythms of the sun”. So in the morning we burn more calories, and by not ingesting anything as the sun goes down, the body cleanses itself.

Which doesn’t happen when we keep eating. The body has neither the time nor the way to free itself from accumulated toxins and free radicals, increasing the risk of chronic inflammation and the onset of overweight, diabetes and other neurodegenerative diseases. This is why it would be good to practice this type of nutrition every now and then. And if instead you stay at fasting for 24 consecutive hours?

The truth

According to research, going hungry to lose weight causes you to lose weight, but not in the right way since it is the lean body mass that decreases and not the fat one. To be affected are therefore the muscles and not the fat deposits as we would like. So it absolutely is contraindicated fasting for a long time, as it would only be a fake weight loss. Even the organs get to shrink by 20%. Furthermore, one runs the risk of causing gods changes in metabolism. The body as we know burns even at rest, via what is known as basal metabolic rate, the one useful for carrying out normal daily activities. And this is related to lean body mass; with forced fasting the body draws the necessary calories from lean body mass and the basal metabolic rate is lowered, therefore when you go back to eating the body retains it is unable to dispose of the calories and transforms them into additional grasso.

Fasting for only 24 hours, however, maximum once a month also has benefits. First of all it determines weight loss since in this way metabolic ketosis is started – which begins after about 16 hours of fasting – and this ensures that the lean mass is not affected. But not only that, because it is thought that it can even lengthen life, prevent cancer, improve brain function and reduce the risk of developing diabetes and even cardiovascular diseases. However, let us remind you once again that the practice can be carried out once a month maximum and that in any case it is always preferable to consult your doctor before proceeding with such strong choices.
