Electronic cigarettes or vape devices are increasingly being bought. They are characterized by the absence of odor and ash, which motivates people to use them.
Vaping devices can be found in almost every neighborhood store, and images of them litter the city. The most vulnerable are teenagers, their interesting design and various flavors being the main reasons for them to buy and use them. If it seems quite healthy for them, because they don’t consume classic tobacco, pulmonologists are totally against it. However, not only young people are prone to this type of consumption. Parents choose such a vape device for the same reason, considering that they can use it in the presence of the child.
Alessia is the manager of a team promoting devices with induction heating of tobacco and tells us that it is not only teenagers who use such products, but also parents: “There are cases where a child appears in smoking families, and the parents do not they still want to smoke normal cigarettes and then they turn to the vape device, so that there is no more smell and smoke in the house”.
With her help, I was able to find out how many devices (from a certain company) are sold in Sibiu. According to the report sent by her, between 75-80 vape devices and almost 4,200 packs of cigarettes were sold in the city of Sibiu in October.
We wanted to know the pulmonologist’s opinion about the use of these devices. Raul Oltean is a resident doctor at the Sibiu Pneumoftisiology Hospital and he talks to us about electronic cigarettes and their impact on health.
He tells us that the technical characteristics of these devices are added to the biochemical mechanisms of addiction, making them very attractive to young people, teenagers and even children. The spectacular colors and vapor clouds give them the opportunity to use the device almost anywhere.

“Both e-cigarettes and heated tobacco devices work on the principle Heating is not burning. The fact that we inhale the vapors resulting from heating a product, instead of inhaling smoke resulting from a combustion reaction, is less harmful to our lungs, but not without risks.
Smoking is an old habit that has accompanied mankind since ancient times. It’s no secret that our ancestors also smoked various plants, including tobacco. In the last 200 years, medicine has studied the effects of classic smoking on the human body and has come to the conclusion that it can produce various diseases in the human body, the most common and serious being acute myocardial infarction (popularly known as heart attack heart), COPD or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which is a slowly progressive disease manifested by a productive cough (especially in the morning) and fatigue with less and less effort, in advanced stages. Tobacco can also cause different types of lung cancer – including the most aggressive type, namely small cell carcinoma. The use of electronic cigarettes represents a risk to the health of the lungs, but the diseases to which their users are prone still remain uncertain until the contrary test of time”, explains the resident doctor.
Bronchial asthma, one of the most common chronic diseases caused by smoking
Bronchial asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases, currently being, in fact, the most common chronic disease in children. A patient with asthma exposed to those vapors (even through second-hand vaping – exposure to vapors exhaled by other people) may experience an “asthma attack” secondary to exposure and manifested by shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, coughing and wheezing ( wheezing).
There have also been reported cases where some people have been able to quit smoking with the help of e-cigarettes, but they are few in number.
We asked Raul what advice he has for people who want to quit smoking: “The most important thing is motivation. People can become very motivated all of a sudden, and then most quit smoking right away. Unfortunately, this motivation comes, very often, when the patient receives a diagnosis of a serious or incurable disease caused by smoking. The best advice is to think about it before you get there.”
Substitution with electronic cigarettes or devices like IQOS or Glo are ineffective methods of quitting smoking, and the method of gradually reducing the number of cigarettes smoked per day also has modest results.
“There are products in pharmacies for smoking cessation, and I recommend that all smokers use them, because they have proven their safety over time, but motivation and awareness of the risks are the most important factors,” he explains.
