Although the fumes are less harmful than tobacco smoke, they are not as harmless as the fumes in, for example, a sauna. An important difference is that the liquid in e-cigarettes contains chemicalssuch as nicotine, solvents and additives, and sauna vapor consists entirely of water.
Lung tissue is weakened
When heated, some chemicals are converted into harmful aerosols, such as formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and acrolein. These substances can irritate and damage lung tissue.
The respiratory tract contains cilia, called cilia, that remove harmful particles and microbes. Warm, moist air has a positive effect on the cilia and ciliated cells, but the nicotine vapors from e-cigarettes weaken the ability of the cilia to remove particles and microbes from the respiratory tract.
Scans for example, show that e-cigarette users have higher levels of inflammation in their lungs than both non-smokers and cigarette smokers.
However, e-cigarettes are still relatively new, so researchers don’t yet have a full picture of their health effects.
