The intestines host huge numbers of bacteria, some of which are beneficial and some that are harmful. Good gut bacteria can be stimulated by eating certain foods and staying away from others.
German biochemist Tobias Juris says that the intestines are home to about 100 trillion microorganisms, which make up what is known as the “intestinal microbiome”, which has a significant impact on health, whether positive or negative.
Juris added that gut bacteria are divided into beneficial bacteria and harmful bacteria, explaining that beneficial bacteria are of great importance to health, as they work to strengthen the immune system and have a positive effect on the metabolism process, and they also have an anti-inflammatory effect.
Dietary fiber
For his part, German internal medicine physician Professor Andreas Stalmach explained that beneficial gut bacteria can be stimulated by eating foods rich in dietary fiber such as vegetables, fruits, whole grain products, nuts and legumes.
Stalmach added that fermented foods, such as sauerkraut, also stimulate beneficial gut bacteria thanks to the “lactobacilli” that arise during fermentation, as well as thanks to their high dietary fiber content.
And Shtalmach confirms that there are other foods that have a negative effect on beneficial gut bacteria, especially red meat and sausage. Therefore, the consumption of red meat per week should not exceed 300 to 500 grams.
It is also harmful foods fast food. In addition, taking antibiotics indiscriminately negatively affects beneficial gut bacteria.
Fasting
In turn, Sophia Forslund of the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine indicated that fasting has a positive effect on beneficial gut bacteria, as it leads to their multiplication.
This effect can be achieved by fasting for 5 days, according to the results of a recent practical study.
