The Impact of Diet on Autoimmune Disease: Della’s Story

KOMPAS.com – Della (25), a woman from Sidoarjo, East Java was diagnosed with autoimmune disease.

Through her Tiktok account @yukbisayuk.27, Della shares stories about the autoimmune disease she suffers from. It is suspected that the autoimmune disease he suffered was caused by his habit of eating out.

“Maybe my diet wasn’t nutritious, it contained a lot of gluten and pushed my body too hard and ended up dropping,” he wrote in his upload.

When contacted by Kompas.com, Tuesday (31/10/2023), Della admitted that she had been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease since August 2023.

Until now he is still undergoing treatment to cure his disease.

“Right now (it’s still) the healing period, so sometimes spots still appear after activity or work,” he said.

Della’s story is that she suffers from autoimmune disease

Autoimmune is a disease that occurs because the body’s immune system attacks the body’s cells.

According to Della’s story, initially she experienced red spots on her skin. It was thought that the red spots were caused by mosquito bites.

“(But) as the days went by, the spots (spots) became more and more numerous. For three days and then on the fourth day my legs became stiff, stiff to the point of being paralyzed. I really couldn’t walk, I had to be carried,” he said.

Because he didn’t get better, he had his condition checked by a medical service before finally being diagnosed with autoimmune disease.

“According to the doctor’s information, (the causes) could be various factors, viral or bacterial infections, stress, fatigue,” he said.

The doctor also said that the autoimmune disease he suffered from could be triggered by the habit of eating out.

“Diet can be a trigger too, especially those that contain gluten,” he said.

Autoimmune causes

Internal medicine specialist and Chairman of JDN Indonesia, Andi Khomeini Takdir, said that a lifestyle habit of eating out can cause autoimmune conditions.

“(The habit of eating out) can cause autoimmune disease. Because the autoimmune spectrum is broad and there are various types of food, we don’t know which ones can trigger autoimmune disease,” he said when contacted by Kompas.com Monday (30/10/2023).

Andi said that autoimmune diseases can be caused by various factors.

“The causes of autoimmune disease can be multifactorial, some are caused by genetic contributions, some are caused by lifestyle and the environment,” he explained.

According to Andi, poor diet and lifestyle can worsen autoimmune diseases.

According to him, an unhealthy diet can affect the immune system, but does not directly cause autoimmune diseases.

“Treatment usually aims to control symptoms and slow the progression of the disease,” said Syifa.

Syifa also revealed that some autoimmune diseases can enter remission where the symptoms disappear temporarily.

Can autoimmune disease be cured?

Even though autoimmune symptoms can be cured, Syifa said that the disease is difficult to cure completely.

“Complete (autoimmune) cure is usually difficult to achieve. Treatment involves drugs such as immunosuppressants and physical therapy,” he stressed.
