Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot use the insulin it produces effectively.

Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood glucose. Hyperglycemia, also called increased blood glucose or elevated blood sugar, is a common effect of uncontrolled diabetes and over time causes serious damage to many body systems, especially the nerves and blood vessels.

Reporting from the WHO page, in 2014, 8.5% of adults aged 18 years and over suffered from diabetes. In 2019, diabetes was the direct cause of 1.5 million deaths and 48% of all diabetes deaths occurred before the age of 70. Another 460,000 kidney disease deaths are caused by diabetes, and elevated blood glucose accounts for approximately 20% of cardiovascular deaths.

Between 2000 and 2019, there was a 3% increase in age-adjusted diabetes deaths. In middle and lower income countries, the death rate from diabetes increased by 13%.

In contrast, the likelihood of dying from one of the four major non-communicable diseases (cardiovascular disease, cancer, chronic respiratory disease, or diabetes) between the ages of 30 and 70 decreased by 22% globally between 2000 and 2019.
