The Impact of Delayed Viewing on TV Viewing Figures: Changes in Measurement and Publication

From the end of August, the viewing figures can no longer be viewed a day later. According to the National Media Research, it is better to only share the viewing figures after six days. What does this mean for news sites such as NU.nl?

The National Media Research (NMO) has chosen to approach the viewing survey differently, because viewing behavior has changed.

“In the new study, we measure live and delayed viewing. After the moment of broadcast, many viewers can still watch the program in a delayed manner, sometimes more than 30 percent,” explains NMO director Patricia Sonius. The new research should therefore provide a more complete picture of viewing behaviour.

Parties that contribute to the research, such as NPO, RTL Nederland and Talpa Network, are allowed to send a press release with the figures of their own programs the next day, but not to share information about other channels. For example, they can choose whether they publish the live viewing figures, or wait until a more complete picture – including looking back – is available after six days.

RTL Nederland applauds the change. “In this day and age, this new method of measurement and publication is simply necessary to paint a reliable picture of the viewing figures,” says RTL boss Sven Sauvé.

Viewing figures of current affairs programs are less relevant days later

But there are also criticisms of the new research. Former SBS6 channel boss Tina Nijkamp, who still analyzes the viewing figures on a daily basis, is disappointed by the NMO’s decision. “Can the NPO also postpone the viewing figures? It belongs to all of us and is therefore also public?”, she wondered on social media.

Due to the NMO’s decision, journalists can no longer watch the viewing survey on a daily basis. As a result, NU.nl can no longer share how many viewers programs have attracted the next day, unless the TV channels share this themselves. As a result, less attention is automatically paid to the viewing figures of current affairs programmes, because they are no longer so relevant six days later.
