Tourism spending in the Netherlands has not yet returned to pre-corona levels. According to Statistics Netherlands, the share of tourism in the Dutch economy is still lower than in 2019.

“The economy as a whole is back to pre-corona levels, but tourism is not,” says Peter Hein van Mulligen, chief economist at CBS. “Although the contribution to the economy has grown spectacularly, it is not yet at the old level.”

Tourists spent more money on flights, hotels and camping gear last year than before corona: almost 96 billion euros. But those figures do not give the full picture, because they do not include inflation.

Fewer hotel nights

The hotel stays show that foreign tourists in particular visited our country a lot less often last year. For example, according to CBS, Chinese tourists booked 308,000 overnight stays in the Netherlands in 2019, while that number remained at 62,000 last year.

Amsterdam in particular suffers from this. Last year, the number of hotel nights in that region was still 25 percent lower than in 2019.
