The Impact of Chronic Pain on Mental Health: Exploring the Connection

Chronic pain is defined as that which lasts for three months or more. This pain usually interferes with daily life and can lead to mental health symptoms, including anxiety, depression, and sleep problems. The mental health effects then exacerbate the pain and make it difficult to manage it.

The 2019 National Health Survey found that 20.4% of adults suffer from chronic pain, and about a third of these individuals have severe chronic pain that limits their daily activities. The people most affected by chronic pain are women and those over 65 years of age.

The effect of chronic pain on mental health

Chronic pain can interfere with a person’s daily life in many different ways, including:

Difficulty getting to and from work.

A person’s inability to focus and be productive.

Difficulty preparing meals, caring for children, or engaging in self-care.

Suffering from sleep disorders.

Appetite changes.

Mood swings.

What chronic pain conditions affect mental health?

Certain medical conditions are commonly associated with chronic pain. In some cases, people may experience one or more of these conditions along with mental health symptoms. Chronic pain conditions that can negatively affect mental health include:

1- Arthritis

Arthritis is a common problem among people, as it results in severe pain and other symptoms. Research has also found that people with arthritis have a higher risk of developing psychological conditions, including depression and anxiety.

2- Back and neck pain

This type of pain can result from a variety of causes including injuries, poor sleep, muscle strain, heavy lifting, and medical conditions. Research has found that people with chronic neck or back pain are more likely to develop symptoms of mental health conditions compared to people who did not experience such pain.

3- Endometriosis

Endometriosis or uterine fibroids are conditions that affect menstruating women and can cause severe, debilitating pain. These conditions have been linked to increased emotional stress and an increased risk of anxiety and depression.

4- Fibromyalgia

It is a condition that affects how the brain and spinal cord process pain signals, resulting in pain and other symptoms such as fatigue and problems with memory, sleep, and mood.

5- Migraine

Chronic migraine is a headache that can be excruciatingly painful and debilitating. Evidence suggests that people with chronic migraines have a higher incidence of depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder.

6- Multiple sclerosis

It is a condition in which the immune system attacks and destroys the protective covering of nerves, causing damage and disruption of communication between the brain and the body. People with MS can also experience mental health conditions including increased stress, anxiety, depression and suicidal ideation.
