The manufacturing industry is most commonly affected by cybersecurity incidents due to lack of budget, a new survey from Kaspersky shows. In the future, companies will primarily want to invest in education and training.
A recent study shows that a significant proportion of IT security incidents in Germany, namely 18 percent, are due to a lack of investment in cybersecurity Kaspersky survey. Nevertheless, a majority of 79 percent in this country believe that the existing budget is sufficient to keep up with new cyber threats or to stay ahead of them. On the other hand, 21 percent also say that their budget is not enough for this; 20 percent even lack the means to protect their company’s infrastructure from cyber attacks.
Increase in IT security incidents in the manufacturing industry
A European comparison shows that around one in seven IT security experts in companies in Europe (14 percent) had to complain about IT security incidents in the past two years due to a lack of investment in cybersecurity. The industry in Europe with the most incidents due to lack of finances is manufacturing. The areas of critical infrastructure (KRITIS) and the oil and gas industry are also severely affected by IT security budget restrictions. Other sectors to follow are:

Companies want to take further measures to strengthen their cybersecurity and invest accordingly. Respondents in Germany would like to invest in the following areas in the next 12 to 18 months:
- Threat detection software: 41 percent
- Adoption of SaaS cloud solutions: 39 percent
- Training for cybersecurity professionals: 34 percent
- Training for employees in general: 32 percent
- Implementation of an endpoint protection solution: 30 percent
“Companies need to align their cybersecurity investments with their business strategy; “They need to consider cybersecurity as one of their business objectives,” explains Ivan Vassunov, VP Corporate Products at Kaspersky. “Of course, investments must be justified and effective, which is why the InfoSec department is faced with the challenge of increasing the ROI of investments in information security and justifying investments to senior management or the board.
